tigers starter anibal sanchez, but brandon crawford drives it home for a 2-0 lead. same score. fifth inning now. and miguel cabrera, a chance to tie the game, but ryan vogelsong gets him to cough it off. ending the threat. vogelsong takes it to a scoreless inning. the giants become the first team since the 1966 orioles to pick back-to-back shutouts in the world series. we're joined now live from detroit. vern? >> reporter: dennis, the fans are getting ready to give their concession speeches here in downtown detroit. comerica park all but quiet after that final out, as the giants -- i don't think people really understand what's going on. i mean, two world series titles in the last three years. the giants are on the verge of having one of the greatest runs in the history of baseball. the giants clubhouse certainly knows it and they were

confident, as we go to the clubhouse. >> i definitely wasn't happy with walking. you know, i think i walked four. but i wasn't happy about that. but yeah, you know, it's my first world series. i've been waiting for this since i was five years old. and i wasn't going to go down without a fight, that's for sure. >> can you smell it, taste it? >> we're 3-0. we ain't sleeping on nobody. but it's definitely within reach. i honestly believe we're in a position where we honestly believe where we should be all year long. you can't sleep on those guys. they got one more game to win. i mean, we're up 3-0. pretty sweet. >> there's no secret formula or message for 'em. they're big guys. they know what the situation is. they know we have to come out tomorrow and obviously win a game. i think it starts with that. you don't think about the 4. you think about 1. that's basically what we were thinking about tonight. >> you got to kind of catch lightning in a bottle to make it this far, to accomplish what

it's expected to merge with two winter weather systems is. it's a massive storm that they've dubbed frankenstorm. here's the latest on sandy. this is one big, big storm. the second largest storm in the east coast, the atlantic ocean history since 1988. here it is skirting alongside the carolinas lifting up in a northerly direction. right now landfall looks like it's going to be late sunday night or early monday morning. destination still hard to configure, anywhere between about maryland and new england. but we do know this. the winds now stretch out 450 nautical miles, up to 12 inches of rain anticipated. power outages with wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour. this all coincides with the full moon. we're going to talk more about this later in our broadcast. plus, we're going to talk about

a tsunami advisory for parts of northern california just issued. still straight ahead. the presidential candidates are on a cross-country battleground states blitz, in the days heading down to the election. a fourth of nature is already messing with their trips. >> we're not gonna be able to be in virginia tomorrow. >> reporter: hurricane sandy is forcing both campaigns to make adjustments. mitt romney cancelled three events. vice president biden and president obama also called off rallies. president obama took his hunt for votes for the live free or die state, where he told a group of local teamsters that new hampshire's four electoral votes could make all the difference. governor romney spent the day

in all-important florida, in pensacola, home to a major naval air station. romney brought up a sore spot from the final debate. >> i made the point that our navy is now smaller than anytime in almost a hundred years. and the president's response was well, we don't use bayonets and horses anymore. >> reporter: president obama said romney hiked fees on everything, as governor of massachusetts. >> he raised fees to get a birth certificate, which would have been expensive for me. >> reporter: romney said mr. obama broke promises to cut the deficit and save medicare. >> he is shrinking from the magnitude of the times. >> reporter: both sides are wary of the impact on polling locations, if power outages or storm damage prevents voters from casting their ballots. president obama has adjusted his schedule to stay out of the

storm's path. he is flying to florida half a day early tomorrow for a campaign event and he's getting regular updates from his staff even when he's on the road. they have good lobbyists and that's why we have more prisons and schools that are in decline. >> once again, california schools are asking voters for money, while other agencies raise money at all. why schools are begging for your vote while prisons never have to ask for a penny. closed captioning brought to you by sleep train, wishing you a fun and safe halloween. voters are being asked for e money. and once again, the tax revenue is grab a california ballot and you'll notice that once again, voters are being asked for more money. once again, the request for more tax revenue is aimed an helping california's struggling schools. that's a request other state agencies don't have to make. as cbs 5 reporter dana explains... >> reporter: a classroom and a jail cell are both expensive to operate. but when public schools need more money, they often have to ask voters for it. that is not the case for the

department of corrections. >> all the things we need to create a healthy safe california are being negatively impacted by all of the ways in which we're funneling resources into locking people up. >> reporter: in 2007, the state legislature passed a law allowing the california department of corrections to raise billions of dollars using something called lease revenue bonds. the proceeds of which go to capital improvement projects for prisons and do not require voter approval. last year, the prison system sold $900 million worth, a practice that those who oppose prison expansion call a back- door way to get more money, hassle free. >> and that's what the corrections system enjoys. they have a very simple funding system. they have good lobbyists and that's why we have more prisons, and schools in decline. >> reporter: people with the nonpartisan california

department of finance say selling these bonds to build new facilities is standard operating procedure. >> it's commonly used financing mechanism for state facilities, also things like state offices, toll bridges. >> reporter: public school education by law is guaranteed 48% of the state's general fund, whereas corrections gets about 7%. on average, the state and federal government allocate almost 9,000 per pupil in california, less than half of what the state of new york spends on its students. but getting more money for schools often means asking local voters to increase their own taxes. for example, the city of berkeley raises more than $3,000 per pupil in extra funds. other school districts have had similar success in the bay area, schools in poorer districts, though, don't have parents who can afford that. >> affluent communities are

counting on taxes. affluent communities are passing local bonds to improve the quality of their school facilities. but these are not options available to a lot of middle class and blue collar communities. >> reporter: where budgets are tight and dollars are short, consider this. nearly 50% of inmates nationwide are high school dropouts. in san francisco, dana king, cbs 5. last year, the state cut funding for prisons by more than $4 billion. the state prison population is also going down, much thanks to prisoner reassignment, which transfers prisoners to county jails. as we mentioned, you get a say in california education spending on election day. we talked about prop 30. ice becoming one of the most intense and expensive fights in california. a closer look at what that measure would mean for schools and you tonight at 11:35, during a special edition of eyewitness news.

all right. as roberta was talking about earlier... >> this is just pretty much -- i hate to use the term, but breaking news. we did have the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck outside of juno, alaska. while we do have tsunami warnings in effect for hawaii, we do now have a tsunami advisory in effect, 80 miles northwest of san francisco to the oregon border. meanwhile, all eyes on hurricane sandy, brushing up against the carolinas, racing along. this is taking up a whole lot of real estate. its winds extending out 450 nautical miles, big, big storm. it's going to impact and affect about 60 million people, once it does make landfall perhaps late tomorrow night or early monday morning, dumping copious amounts of precipitation. anywhere about a foot of rain

expected, before it becomes a real big snowmaker. so power outages, with winds up to 70 miles an hour anticipated. and just to throw another little ingredient into the mix, we do have a full mean slated, so higher tides as well. back at home, this is the scene in san jose under clear skies. air temperatures right now into the 50's and 60's. we notice a few clouds drifting in and out before sunup tomorrow morning. tonight's lows, into the 50's, all the way into san jose. 53 in livermore. this is an area of low pressure that is producing rainfall and throughout the pacific northwest, it is being diverted off a very high ridge of high pressure. another day tomorrow with unseasonably warm temperatures. now, today we headed all the way up to 84 in sonoma. this is your futurecast for sunday. notice we start to see a little bit of clouds drifting in off

the coast, but that's late in the afternoon. by this time tomorrow night, we'll have the return of an onshore push so we'll wake up to cloud cover on monday. until then, highs a good 11, 12 degrees above normal for this time of year. beaches, 60's, 70's. peninsula. low 80's across the santa clara valley. inland, 85. 60's and 70's will be common across the northern half of our district. 70's in san francisco, which is spot on for this time of year. clouding up on tuesday. looks like we will have the rain on halloween. chance of rain showers thursday. partly sunny conditions on friday. that is your pinpoint forecast. dennis with another look at sports, straight ahead. home field advantage to cling on to right now. >> reporter: yeah. they haven't been shut out this much in back-to-back games since 2008. the tigers have just been completely suffocated. if this was an open fight, the giants would have a choke hold. the tigers are just about ready to tap out on this one. let's go to the clubhouse and get some thoughts from these guys who are on the verge of winning another. >> both pitchers were on top of their game. but, again, it starts with our starter, who just did a tremendous job for us. >> the inning is over. >> thrilled to death before the game even started, just to have this opportunity, and i'm just glad we -- i was able to have a, you know, a solid game and come out on the right side of this one. >> scutaro was over your shoulder yelling not yet, not yet, but it's human nature. >> i think we do a good job of taking it one at a time.
